Forecasting the Reduction in Urban Air Pollution by Expansion of Market Shares of Eco-Friendly Vehicles: A Focus on Seoul, Korea

Abstract: Due to global climate change, various countries have agreed upon the use of conventions. In this study, the eco-friendly vehicular policy on carbon neutrality implemented in Seoul, Korea, was examined. To this end, various policy-based scenarios were set, and the changes in automotive exhaust gas emissions were evaluated and compared. The evaluation method combined macroscopic and microscopic emission models as its analysis framework. Micro-traffic data available in Korea were used for analyses, and the result… Show more

“…For instance, artificial intelligence algorithms can help predict vehicle carbon emissions, as seen in a novel estimation method based on multifactor macro-fundamental diagrams for full sample traffic volume and overall road network emissions, to achieve road network carbon emission estimations [ 16 ]. Another model focuses on the achievement of carbon neutrality, targeting for the replacement of medium and large passenger cars with pure electric vehicles in Seoul [ 17 ]. Through the analysis of individuals’ choices of pure EVs, Li et al find that driving cost, charging efficiency, and convenience of charging stations are the main influencing factors of NEV consumption [ 18 ].…”

“…The use of fossil fuels, such as petroleum, has been identified as the main cause of fine dust in the country. According to the 2019 petroleum consumption trends compiled by the Korea National Oil Corporation, the total consumption of petroleum products in the country has increased by 20% compared with 10 years ago, particularly due to the increase in the number of vehicle registrations [9,10]. This is because Korea built cities and roads from the perspective of vehicles moving in the city, rather than of people living in the city, for rapid economic growth [11].…”
