Foreign Body Removal and Immediate Nasal Reconstruction with Superficial Temporal Fascia

Abstract: For nasal augmentation, various materials have been used for many years. The injection of foreign body has been carried on, although it is performed mostly by laymen. Because many complications arise after augmentation rhinoplasty by foreign body injection, secondary correction has been needed. These complications have included headaches, swelling, redness, palpable mass, skin discoloration, telangiectasia and fear of cancer. The authors treated 10 patients who had undergone injection of foreign body to the no… Show more

“…12 Previous efforts have been made to minimize the tension imposed on surrounding tissues by wrapping the silicone with temporalis fascia, an approach that has been successfully demonstrated. 13 Therefore, in deciding whether to use silicone in immediate reinsertion, proper size selection and combining the insertion with autologous material are the additional points that can be applied to prevent complications. Another common feature in the 2 unsuccessful cases in our study was the surgical approach.…”

“…It has also been reported that implants are better in cases of poorer blood flow because poor blood flow can encourage necrosis and absorption of autologous tissue. 13 Because surrounding subcutaneous tissue conditions vary between patients, treatment should be determined on a case-by-case basis. Many surgeons consider that implants alone are inappropriate when skin has thinned.…”
