Forest change on a steep mountain gradient after extended fire exclusion: San Francisco Peaks, Arizona, USA

Abstract: Summary 1.More than a century of forest management, including fire exclusion, livestock grazing and tree harvesting, may have affected forest structure and composition in south-western USA. Dendroecological techniques were used to reconstruct an 1876 baseline against which modern conditions could be compared. We assessed the magnitude of changes on the San Francisco Peaks in five distinct forest types: ponderosa, mixed conifer, aspen, spruce-fir and bristlecone. 2. We established a systematic grid of 135 plots… Show more

“…The initial settlement of the Southwest by Euro-Americans (circa 1880s) markedly changed forest structure through intensive logging, livestock grazing and fire suppression, as well as indirectly through fire exclusion (Fulé et al, 1997;Allen et al, 2002;Cocke et al, 2005). These legacies of past land-use practices, or land-use legacies (a.k.a.…”

“…Based on evidence such as fire scars on trees, researchers have determined the pre-settlement reference conditions for the ponderosa pine forests in the area. Prior to pre-settlement, the forest stands in the area experienced frequent and low-intensity fire regimes that supported healthy understory vegetation with a lower risk of erosion (Cocke et al 2005). The ponderosa pine trees were characterized as, "extremely well-spaced and commonly forming a very open forest," (Weaver 1943).…”
