Forest management and conservation under the REDD + initiative: community perspectives across an altitudinal gradient in the Rubeho Mountain Ecosystem in Tanzania

Abstract

This study focused on understanding community perceptions on forest management and conservation under the REDD + initiative along the altitudinal gradient part of the Rubeho Mountain Forest Ecosystem in the Kilosa district of Tanzania. Whilst community awareness on forest management and conservation in both the highland and lowland areas was high, their perceptions on forest management and conservation aspects/attributes were of mixed results meaning that some were asymmetrical and others relatively similar across the gradient. The results further indicated high community willingness to participate in forest management and conservation activities across the gradient. Thus, maintaining the community's level of awareness and willingness in both the highland and lowland areas is crucial. The awareness and willingness are necessary for the sustainable implementation of the REDD + initiative in mountainous areas in Tanzania and other areas with similar contexts. Policies, plans and strategies related to REDD + should also recognise variations and similarities in perceptions across an altitudinal gradient.
