Quercus cerris, the Turkey oak, is an oak species native to southern central and southeastern Europe, extending into southwestern Asia. It is present in a large extent in the forests of the Republic of Kosovo, and at present used mainly for bio-energy. The potential use of Quercus cerris wood for construction and higher value wood products has been investigated in the last years. However limited information is available on wood characteristics and performance, mainly regarding chemical composition and durability. The heartwood of Quercus cerris taken from 70-90 year-old trees grown in two sites in Kosovo was studied regarding resistance to termite attack, chemical composition and hardness. The heartwood contained only 6,7% extractives, with a small content of tannins. The wood density was on average 0,81 at 12% moisture content and Brinell hardness 36,2 MPa. It was classified as not durable against subterranean termites and therefore not suitable for external use in ground contact in termite areas unless adequately protected. Nevertheless, Quercus cerris wood showed adequate hardness and density for interior uses like flooring for domestic and commercial applications with moderate use.

This paper is based on an evaluation of the industrialization levels and main production systems of Brazilian timber housing producers. Two methods were used to investigate this understudied topic. Literaturebased projection was carried out to identify the production system of each sampled company, from the construction technique(s) produced by the same. The second method consisted of face-to-face interviews to identify the current production system of each producer. For both methodologies, the timber housing sector presented a considerable level of industrial development in view of the greater popularity of prefabrication systems. Due to admissions to enable the system identification from the literature-based projections, a result contrast in artisanal production was verified between both methodologies. Despite the sampling difference, the two methods showed typical results for the industrial processes. Thus, few artisanal developers and the visible amount of industrial-based producers could regard this sector as industrial-featured.

The paper shows some physical properties of sessile oak obtained in Kosovo regions. In the study are shown: wood shrinkage, specific gravity, shrinkage coefficient for 1% change of moisture content, ratio of shrinkage in tangential and radial direction etc. The amount of volumetric shrinkage of sessile oak is 15.95%, heartwood part has an average shrinkage 15.41% in The shrinkage of sapwood part is 17.56%. Specific gravity at: wet condition: (1.013gr/cm3); 12% (0.853gr/cm3) and 0% (0.826gr/cm3) of moisture content. Specific gravity of heartwood at: wet condition (1.05gr/cm3); 12% (0.88gr/cm3); 0% (0.85gr/cm3). The specific gravity of sapwood at: wet condition (0.91gr/cm3); 12% (0.77gr/cm3); 0% (0.748gr/cm3). The ratio of average shrinkage between tangential and radial cutting direction is 1.71%. This ratio was significantly higher in sapwood than heartwood. Coefficient of shrinkage (changing 1% of moisture content) in the radial direction is 0.00196, and 0.00323 in tangential direction.
