Formal Criteria for Feature Interactions in Telecommunications Systems

Abstract: The feature interaction problem in telecommunications systems increasingly obstructs the evolution of such systems. We develop formal detection criteria which render a necessary (but less than sufficient) condition for feature interactions. It can be checked mechanically and points out all potentially critical spots. These have to be analyzed manually. The resulting resolution decisions are incorporated formally. Some prototype tool support is already available. A prerequisite for formal criteria is a formal d… Show more

“…Bredereke [50,30] presents an automata theoretic formalisation of the feature interaction problem. He introduces a specification style that is based on the principles of modification on a coarsegrained level and addition of transitions as the only allowed change of a specification (deletions are not allowed).…”

“…Based on these principles, the term of feature interaction is formally defined, and necessary conditions for interactions are presented. The detection technique is implemented in the tool CONFINE based on the formal description technique ESTELLE [50,51]. A resolution mechanism is sketched, which is based on the introduction of precedence relations between transitions and on the specification of additional behaviour in order to resolve the conflict.…”

“…Among them we recall [3], presenting feature specifications based on logical formulae conceptually similar to our rules, but their idea of "feature composition" and of "interaction" is really less flexible than our (e.g., using our terminology transitions are composed only when have the same label, and interaction is just atomic). In e.g., [4] Bredereke, trying to give a formal view of features and interactions, considers the importance of the behavioral aspects. Also [5] presents a formal based treatment of features for telecommunication systems, but at a more concrete level (i.e.…”
