Formal Modeling IoT Systems on the Basis of BiAgents* and Maude

Abstract: The Internet of Things is an emerging worldwide ecosystem in which smart devices interact to build smart homes, smart cities, etc. In such context, plethora of research efforts are oriented to networking and devices; analyzing and formalizing IoT systems are still in their earliest state. In this paper, we propose a BiAgents* (Bigraphical Agents) model to provide a formal description for IoT systems structure and behavior. In addition, we encode the BiAgents* specification into Maude language to enable an auto… Show more

“…In addition, we refined the definition of BiAgents* proposed by [9] to model these different aspects of a fog system. Indeed, bigraphs are a suitable framework supporting the hierarchical and modular description of fog systems.…”

“…In the present work, we consider a BiAgents extension of [9]. We refine its definition noted as BiAgents* in order to maintain the separation between both bigraphs and agents concepts and to specify more accurately the behaviour of the agent part.…”

“…It is also feasible to define the dynamics of a system within bigraphs framework. So far they have been found useful in designing Internet of Things [31][32] and computer networks [33]. The applicability of bigraphs in the process of designing behavior of a multi-agent system's elements requires further research.…”

“…Being a metamodel, BRSs provide a range of general results and tools which can be readily instantiated with the specific model under scrutiny: libraries for bigraph manipulation [4,34,35], simulation tools [17,30,32,44], graphical editors [16], model checkers [39], modular composition [38], etc. Indeed, BRSs have been successfully used to formalize a wide range of models and situations, including process calculi, context-aware systems, web-service orchestration languages, cyber-physical scenarios, biological systems, software architectures, and IoT systems [2,3,[6][7][8]29,36,41,[47][48][49][50].…”
