Formation and assignment of silver defect centres in phosphate glass induced by femtosecond laser pulses

Abstract: We have investigated the formation and assignment of silver defect centres such as Ag 0 , Ag 2+ and other molecular silver species induced by femtosecond (fs) laser pulse irradiation. In particular, direct precipitation of silver nanoparticles without heat treatment was demonstrated to clarify the formation kinetics of silver defect centres in a radiophotoluminescent phosphate glass by 250 kHz high repetition rate fs laser pulses. Comparison using X-ray-and fs laser-irradiation methods is also presented.

“…Based on a peak-fitting analysis, an RPL decay curve analysis and a heat treatment, the seven decomposed Gaussian bands in X-ray-irradiated PG:Ag with peaks at 192, 225, 252, 270, 307, 354 and 424 nm were attributed to electron-trapped PO 3 , PO 4 and Ag + , Ag 3 2+ or Ag 3 + , Ag 2 + , Ag 2+ , Ag 0 and phosphorus-oxygen-hole centres (POHCs), respectively [11][12][13].…”

“…Such a behaviour, i.e., the ratios of the orange to blue RPL intensity in Ag-activated phosphate glass, was strongly sensitive to the radiation types, such as alpha 15) and gamma rays 7) ; to the pulse duration, such as a femtosecond laser; 16) and to the irradiation conditions at different temperatures and excitation photon energy. 17) A set of the time-resolved RPL spectra over 80 curves at different depths, with a step As the similar spectra of Fig. 3, a set of the time-resolved RPL spectra over 80 curves at different depths under X-ray irradiation were also measured, as shown in Fig.…”

“…In addition, the origin, formation kinetics and optical properties were also investigated with a peak-fitting analysis, a high-repetition-rate femtosecond (fs) laser technique, an RPL decay curve analysis, a heat treatment, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) (Zheng and Kurobori, 2011a;Zheng et al, 2011;Zheng and Kurobori, 2011b).…”
