“…Other PLs under specific solvent conditions may also form nanotubes, serving as templates for tubular morphologies, and recent studies have demonstrated that the use of 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC 8,9 PC) provides a convenient opportunity for producing larger quantities of ferromagnetic nanotubes (FMNTs) without using elaborate membrane templates. 23 Using this approach we synthesized concentric FMNTs which consist of the carbon phase sandwiched between two iron oxide layers morphologies. 23 Since these multilayered morphologies will impact magneto-electric properties, these studies focus on the elucidation of structural and morphological features of these unique FMNTs.…”

“…Recent studies revealed that biologically active phospholipid (PL) nanotubes 16 can effectively serve as precursors to produce ferromagnetic Fe 3 O 4 /carbon/Fe 3 O 4 concentric nanotubes (FMNTs), 17 wherein carbon layers, synthesized via a simple twostep synthetic approach, were sandwiched between the magnetite layers, thus resulting in concentric nanotubes. Further studies revealed 18 that the nanotubes consist of iron oxide/carbon/iron oxide concentric layers with a carbon layer sandwiched by two iron oxide layers and showed that the iron oxide phase of the FMNT consists of 10.6 nm magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) single crystals and fractional amounts of hematite (a-Fe 2 O 3 ) phase. Also, the iron oxide phase diffuses into multilayered carbon sheets, forming interfacial regions containing sulfur impurities.…”

“…The procedures for preparation of FMNTs followed the previously published reports. 16,17 DC 8,9 PC nanotubes were obtained using the literature method. 15,17,23,25 10 mL of an aqueous dispersion with 1.1 mol L À1 DC 8,9 PC nanotubes was purged with N 2 for 0.5 h, followed by the addition of 0.5 mL of 0.4 mol L À1 ammonium iron(II) sulfate hexahydrate aqueous solution, which served as a reducing agent.…”
