Formation of Tetragonally-Packed Rectangular Cylinders from ABC Block Terpolymer Blends

Abstract: Effect of composition distribution of ABC linear terpolymers on the formation of periodic structures was investigated. Five poly(isoprene-b-styrene-b-2-vinylpyridine) (ISP) triblock terpolymers with almost constant molecular weights of ca. 130k and with similar center-block fraction at around 0.55, were blended variously. It has been found that tricontinuous gyroid structures gradually transform into a cylindrical structure whose rectangular cylinders are packed tetragonally if composition distribution increas… Show more

“…Another striking example where marked multimodal dispersity was able to produce a very specific morphology by selected chain location was reported by Asai et al [ 15 ] in a 2014 paper. In this work, ISP polymers having the same molar mass (≈120 kg mol −1 ), the same middle‐block volume fraction, but a marked difference in end‐block volume fraction (volume fractions of PI:PS:P2VP equal to 0.39:0.56:0.05, and 0.06:0.62:0.32) were mixed.…”

“…With increasing 3-NDP content, spheres on tetragonally packed diamondshaped cylinders-in-lamellae were observed, spheres on double parallel lamellae-in-lamellae, and spheres on double perpendicular lamellae-in-lamellae. Blending of triblock terpolymer morphologies with homopolymers or hydrogen bonded triblock terpolymers of different composition generated unprecedented rectangular cylinders in a tetragonal unit lattice, [58] tetragonally-packed spheres, core/shell double gyroids [59] or rectangular-shaped rods. [60] These blending examples teach that there are likely to be more BCP morphologies hidden in unexplored areas of the ternary microphase diagram as well as hierarchical structures by loading of individual microdomains with small molecular weight additives.…”

“…[40] But blending can also be used to obtain different morphologies starting from neat block copolymers. [41] This is of especial interest if a certain desired morphology is difficult to achieve because of its appearance in a narrow composition range. For example, the gyroid morphology has been able to be studied more precisely via blending experiments.…”
