Formulation and Evaluation of Buccal Patches for Delivery of Atenolol

Abstract: Abstract. Buccal patches for the delivery of atenolol using sodium alginate with various hydrophilic polymers like carbopol 934 P, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in various proportions and combinations were fabricated by solvent casting technique. Various physicomechanical parameters like weight variation, thickness, folding endurance, drug content, moisture content, moisture absorption, and various ex vivo mucoadhesion parameters like mucoadhesive strength, force of adhesion… Show more

“…1 In addition, the buccal mucosa is comparatively permeable and is readily accessible for self-medication. 2 The potential of this route to augment trans-mucosal transport of therapeutic agents and delivering it into blood has been demonstrated for several poorly oral bioavailable drugs. 3,4 Many types of mucoadhesive dosage forms have been designed and investigated for buccal delivery in the past decade.…”

“…In the previous literature, a few attempts have been undertaken to design atenolol-releasing buccal films and patches. 9,[12][13][14][15] However, in the previous literature, no attempt has been undertaken to formulate atenolol patches using plant-derived natural mucoadhesive polymers along with hydroxylpropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC). HPMC is a release-retardant polymer.…”

“…Numerous retentive buccoadhesive devices [2][3][4][5][6], were developed in order to solve the conventional dosage form limitations. Buccal mucoadhesive patches are preferable over the buccal tablets for their flexibility, and the patches tend to be less obtrusive and are more likely to be accepted by patients.…”
