Existing studies often use the association between sector sizes to test the supplementary and complementary models of government–nonprofit relations, assuming that one mode of government–nonprofit relations dominates a policy subsector. We challenge this assumption and propose that the relationship between nonprofit sector size and the breadth of local government policy actions depends on their level of collaboration. Situated in the context of urban climate governance and drawing information from a national survey of U.S. local government climate actions, we test this modified model and find a statistically significant moderation effect of collaboration. However, contrary to our proposed hypotheses, our findings suggest that a positive association between the number of environmental nonprofits and governmental climate actions exists when the level of government–nonprofit collaboration is low to moderate. We posit that the adversarial lens of government–nonprofit relations and the cost of collaboration are key to understanding these surprising findings.

Motivated by the notion that collaboration is essential to achieving sustainable development, this research explores the impact of the Brazil‐based Amazon Fund Collaborative Platform in boosting sustainable production across multiple forest and agroforestry initiatives in the Amazon region. Collaborative platforms represent a relatively new concept, amounting to governance structures that facilitate the creation, adaptation, and success of multiple ongoing collaborative projects or networks. Utilizing data sourced from the Brazilian Amazon spanning from 2003 to 2017, we employ a difference‐in‐differences with multiple time periods estimation to understand the effects of the Amazon Fund Collaborative Platform on the production of forest and agroforestry goods. Our results, which show that collaborative platforms are associated with significantly higher production, enjoin policymakers to adopt platforms in promoting sustainable development.

Community Leadership and Donor-Advised Funds: Navigating Logics of Donor Services and Community Leadership in Community Foundations

The growth of donor-advised funds provides an increasingly robust source of philanthropic capital for community foundations, but its impact on their leadership roles remains unknown. To what extent do community foundations maintain community leadership amid increasing pressure to accommodate donor wishes? Drawing on the institutional logics perspective and historical accounts, I theorize that community foundations are hybrids—they operate by combining the field-level logics of donor services and community leadership at varying degrees. Through an exploratory mixed-methods design, I analyzed the text data from annual reports and administrative data from the 990 forms of 482 community foundations. The findings reveal a positive association between the logic of donor services and leadership practices; specifically, foundations with a strong donor service logic, as indicated by the ratio of donor-advised fund (DAF)-funded grants, tend to exhibit a broader range of leadership activities. This study reveals that these logics not only coexist but may also mutually reinforce each other within the community foundation field.
