Two new coordination compounds, namely 1D [Mn(pztza) 2 (4,4 0 -bipy)(H 2 O) 2 ]Á2H 2 O (1) and [Co(4,4 0 -bipy) (H 2 O) 4 ]Á2pztzaÁ4H 2 O (2), were synthesized by the reactions of Hpztza [Hpztza = 5-(2-pyrazinyl)tetrazole-2-acetic acid] with 4,4 0 -bipyridine and MnCl 2 Á4H 2 O or CoCl 2 Á6H 2 O in the presence of NaOH. The two compounds were structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray analysis reveals that the two compounds form 1D chain structure via the bridging 4,4 0 -bipy. In compound 1, pztza acts as a monodentate ligand to coordinate to Mn(II) center, while in compound 2, pztza ligands are not coordinated to Co(II) centers, instead, they are connected to the 1D chain via hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, the luminescent properties were investigated at room temperature in the solid state.
