“…All the animals of this series were young at the time of diagnosis and this is consistent with the theory that diverticula are developmental in origin. In human patients, arachnoid diverticula of the fourth ventricle mainly affect young patients, although some cases are diagnosed in adult or elderly persons . In our five dogs, three were unrelated female Border Collies.…”

“…Neither of the two dogs reported here had membranes or septations in the fourth ventricle visible on MRI. In human patients, the diverticula may not communicate with the CSF of the ventricle and this can be delineated with positive contrast ventriculography as a filling defect within the ventricle . In dog 1, a filling defect was not observed with contrast ventriculography performed postmortem, as the contrast medium entered and filled the fourth ventricle uniformly and was observed immediately exiting into the syrinx of the spinal cord.…”

“…A second operation was performed for patients during which the liquid content of the cyst was evacuated and cyst walls were excised. The patients' clinical condition improved after the cyst excision [19][20][21]. Nomura and associates have reported successful management of a complicated posterior fossa arachnoid cyst case via endoscopic fenestration [30].…”

“…They performed total cyst excision in one case and partial cyst excision in three cases in which they performed ventriculoperitoneal shunting. They concluded that a fourth ventricle arachnoid cyst causing hydrocephalus should be differentiated from a communicating hydrocephalus as patients with a fourth ventricle arachnoid cyst will not benefit from ventriculoperitoneal shunting without cyst excision [19]. Korouse and associates reported a case of arachnoid cyst of the fourth ventricle causing normal pressure hydrocephalus.…”
