Fractal Structure and Entropy Production within the Central Nervous System

Abstract: Abstract:Our goal is to explore the relationship between two traditionally unrelated concepts, fractal structure and entropy production, evaluating both within the central nervous system (CNS). Fractals are temporal or spatial structures with self-similarity across scales of measurement; whereas entropy production represents the necessary exportation of entropy to our environment that comes with metabolism and life. Fractals may be measured by their fractal dimension; and human entropy production may be estima… Show more

“…Identical patterns to the rise and fall of entropy production seen through the deteriorating path to aging are also observed in healthy versus ill individuals [236]. Namely, a decrease in cortical complexity (i.e., fractal dimension [244] of the central nervous system) with illness correlating with metabolic decline in glucose metabolism is observed in ill individuals [236,[245][246][247].…”

“…Additionally, heat production occurs during oxygen intake with metabolism breaking down macromolecules (e.g., carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins) to free high-quality chemical energy to produce work. In both cases, this heat dissipation leads to entropy production [234][235][236].…”

“…Entropy has been used not only in the context of CS, but also in many other scientific areas [3,29,43]. In information theory, entropy was introduced by Shannon for studying the amount of information contained in a message.…”
