“…This content of the metal is within the normal regulation of plant and animal functions (Fateev and Pashchenko, 2003;Minkina et al, 2013). These values are close to the background content of Cu in chernozems, which varies from 21 to 30 mg kg −1 (according to different data) and its clarke value for soils (20 mg kg −1 ) but exceed the regional estimates for the element content obtained more than 37-45 years ago (Minkina et al, 2012).…”

“…The total content of HMs in the soils of plots 9 and 10, which situated in 15-20 km away from the NPS, was close to their regional background levels: Pb 4.2; Zn 26-28; Cd 0.2-0.3; Cr 104-106; Cu 3-6; Ni 38-39 mg/kg (Mandzhieva et al, 2014b;Minkina et al, 2013). In spite of the proximity of the Novocherkassk city to plots 9 and 10 its effect on the metal concentration in soil was not established.…”

“…These relationships can be related to the hydromorphicity of meadow-chernozemic soils due to the occurrence of groundwater at a depth of 2-3 m, which is untypical for the zonal soils. Such water conditions affect the structure and properties of soils, which results in the fixation of microelements on soil aggregates (Minkina et al, 2013). The NPS operates over many years (N50 years) and has a prolonged (chronic) effect on the soils of adjacent areas.…”
