Fractional-Order Edge Detection Masks for Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis as a Case Study

Abstract: Edge detection is one of the main steps in the image processing field, especially in biomedical imaging, to diagnose a disease or trace its progress. The transfer of medical images makes them more susceptible to quality degradation due to any imposed noise. Hence, the protection of this data against noise is a persistent need. The efficiency of fractional-order filters to detect fine details and their high noise robustness, unlike the integer-order filters, it renders them an attractive solution for biomedical… Show more

“…Retinopathy Diagnosis: Case Studies To accomplish these methods one should be in online mode to save time which is necessary to raise the number of persons registered to a large extent. In [87], the authors discussed fractional-order flters for edge identifcation in biomedical imaging technologies. Te study employed left-sided and right-sidedfractional-order mask flters to fne-tune the image with whole edges detected without noisy data and the performance evaluation of fundus images on the STARE dataset.…”

“…For example, the frequency response of FIR and IIR filters can be approximated to the frequency response of the fractional operator. These methods can be used to implement the fractional order operator needed for different systems, such as image processing [16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…The experimental analysis proved that the proposed methods can suppress efficiently undesirable effects caused by traditional techniques. In [22], two novel central fractional-order masks were proposed to evaluate upon applying salt and pepper noise and Gaussian noise. The fractional-order parameter gives an extra degree of freedom in designing different masks.…”
