Fractionated ablative carbon dioxide laser for the treatment of rhinophyma

Abstract: Rhinophyma treated with fractionated ablative CO2 laser using relatively aggressive parameters achieved good cosmetic outcomes in this group of early to moderate cases of rhinophyma, while still retaining the benefits of a fractionated treatment such as faster healing times and fewer adverse events.

“…It is commonly seen in association with chronic rosacea and historically has been considered as the end stage of rosacea. 1 This rare disease is mostly noted in middle-aged Caucasian men, 2 and few reports have focused on Asian patients. There have been several attempts by Western researchers to establish a unified standard classification and grading systems for this disease, and standard classification and severity grading systems were proposed by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) Expert Committee in 2002 and 2004, respectively.…”

“…In 2010, González et al introduced the fractional yttrium scandium gallium garnet laser in the treatment of cystic lesions associated with rhinophyma (10). More recently, Serowka et al successfully treated a small group of rhinophyma patients with the 10,600 nm fractional CO2 laser using aggressive settings (11). In fractional laser therapy, highly reproducible columns of ablation are created surrounded by intact skin.…”

Technological enhancements such as scanned and "superpulsed" systems emit shorter pulses with high power, reducing common adverse effects such as scarring and dyspigmentation.…”
