“…In this study, nearly 20% of the total Pb concentrations existed in residual Pb forms, in agreement with others' findings (Gobeil et al, 2005) on the importance of bound organic and sulfide Pb (Weisz et al, 2000), with Pb forming the stable organic complexs and binding to the sulfide. At all these sites, the exchangeable and carbonate bound Zn accounted for 50%-60% of the total Zn concentration, similar to the results of other water bodies (Weisz et al, 2000).…”

“…At all these sites, the exchangeable and carbonate bound Zn accounted for 50%-60% of the total Zn concentration, similar to the results of other water bodies (Weisz et al, 2000). The relatively high percentages of exchangeable and carbonate bound Cu, Ni, and Zn (Fig.3) indicated that these metals from wastewater existed as adsorbed phases on the surface of sediments (Kim et al, 1998).…”

“…The high stability constant of organic Cu compounds results in stable complex formation between Cu and organic matter (Morillo et al, 2004). It has been shown in other studies that under oxidising conditions, the solubility of Cu is increased as it is a chalcophile element that is mainly bound to sulfides in nature (Weisz et al, 2000;Tu¨zen, 2003). The results agree with the results of other studies (Tokaliog˘lu et al, 2000;Morillo et al, 2004), which found that a large proportion of Cu in sediments is associated with the organic fraction.…”

“…The bio-available fraction is defined as the amount of element which is bound to wastes (easily exchangeable ions, metal carbonates, oxides, sulphides, organometallic compounds, ions in crystal lattices of minerals, etc.) that can be exchanged with organisms and be incorporated into their structures (Vangronsveld and Cunningham, 1998;Weisz et al, 2000;Yu et al, 2001). In this sense, sequential extraction therefore permits us to precisely identify the origin of element and to better understand their geochemical cycles and mobility.…”
