Frailty in relation to the risk of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and death in older Chinese adults: A seven-year prospective study

Abstract: Frailty was associated with Alzheimer's disease and dementia over a seven years period. Frailty index might facilitate the identification of older adults at high risk of dementia for the application of the most effective, targeted prevention strategies.

“…Because of reports suggesting changes in body and spleen weights (correlated with inflammatory signals), and the development of frailty in age-related dementias, such as AD [ 35 , 78 , 81 , 96 , 106 ], we evaluated the impact of stroke on these physiological parameters in aged hAPP-SL mice. However, we did not detect a significant difference in the body weights of both the stroke- and sham-operated hAPP-SL mice at pre- and post-surgery timepoints (Fig.…”

“…Some of the identified informative features are consistent with previous literature in its relationship to frailty. Dementia, the first split in the decision tree, has a one-to-one correspondence with frailty in the CFS [28][29], and was shown to have a positive relationship with the Frailty Index (14). The appearance of "vitamins" being prescribed in the medications table may be related to age or nutrition as malnutrition is associated with increased frailty [30], and that nutritional supplementation (including the prescribing of vitamins) has been shown to be a potential therapy for frailty [31][32][33][34].…”

“…Cognitive impairment is becoming more prevalent in older persons, and the consequences of dementia for this population are an increasingly worrying public health issue 1 . Thus, the study of diseases and syndromes most present in the elderly population is critical in order to contribute to the promotion and restoration of their health and quality of life 2 .…”
