Framing the Local Context and Estimating the Health Impact of CPPW Obesity Prevention Strategies in Los Angeles County, 2010-2012

Abstract: Program context and PRISM-simulated health impacts showed modest but promising results in LAC, which may lead to further population health improvements in the future. Downstream health and behavioral surveillance data are needed to confirm these estimates.

“…Although all five furthered our understanding of the potential effects envisaged by intervening on the food, built, and socioeconomic environment, the one overarching takeaway from this research is that BMI varied by the type of intervention implemented and for each intervention; the impact of BMI appears to be further affected by geography (likely interactions with other interventions) and by the circumstances or contexts at the community level. This heterogeneity in findings is consistent with an emerging body of evidence suggesting that there is a need for additional study of strategy interventions on obesity outcomes, with a focus on understanding the interactions of interventions implemented at multiple levels and on the combining of these interventions to achieve aggregate effects (Table ) . Some of this work is already under way, seeking to confirm the collective health impact of using combination strategies to halt the obesity epidemic .…”

“…Only two computational models incorporated components representing natural systems. The PRISM model included particulate air pollution endogenously and pollution control regulations exogenously. The Virtual Population Obesity Prevention Lab implicitly incorporated weather as an exogenous factor influencing an agent's baseline probability to exercise.…”

“…PRISM calculates outcomes annually and cumulatively from 1990 through 2040 (7–10). PRISM was validated in several ways during its development and has been used to estimate the long-term impact of other community health programs, such as the Communities Putting Prevention to Work program (11) and public health prevention activities of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department (12).…”
