Free-carrier dynamics and band tails in Cu2ZnSn(SxSe1x

Abstract: We investigated the composition-dependent photocarrier dynamics in Cu 2 ZnSn(S x Se 1−x ) 4 (CZTSSe) single crystals using various types of steady-state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectroscopy shows that the band-tail states formed below the band edge decrease monotonically with increasing Se content. THz time-resolved spectroscopy clarifies that an increase in the Se content leads to a shorter lifetime of the free photocarriers. A trade-off between the composition-dependent band… Show more

“…By investigating a high-quality, quasi-equilibrium single crystal of CZTSe, we eliminate the effects of grain boundaries and minimize the impact of secondary phases. The strategy of studying single crystals to infer routes to improve polycrystalline thin film PV devices has proven to be remarkably effective for CdTe [33,34], and has recently been employed for CZTSSe as well [35][36][37][38][39][40]. Notably, Kanemitsu et al have investigated carrier dynamics in CZTS [35,36,38] and CZTSSe [37] single crystals.…”

“…The CZTSSe compound is characterized by a strong self‐doping and high compensation . The interaction between defects, with relevance for the donors, create electrostatic fluctuating potentials along the film (), which determines critically the electronic energy levels structure and the dynamics of the charge carriers in the material . One of the important issues in the physical characterization of an optoelectronic material is the influence of structural properties and growth conditions on the electronic energy levels structure and charge carriers dynamics.…”

“…This is supported by the excitation fluence dependence of the CZTS x Se 1-x PL spectra shown in Figure 5. 62,66 In Figure 5a for the CZTSe (x = 0) sample, a new peak becomes dominant at high excitation fluences, which is assigned to the PL from the band edge. The PLE and PL spectra for CZTSe show that the fluctuation of the band edge due to spatial electric fields is small (see Figure 4).…”

“…62 In the electrostatic potential fluctuation model, the absorption coefficient α is a function of E g and γ, [62][63][64][65] and the calculation result for α is shown with the red broken curves in Figure 4a. The parameter γ and the Stokes shift are plotted in the lower panel of Figure 4b.…”
