Free space optical communication in the visible bandwidth for V2V safety critical protocols

Abstract: Vehicular Communication Systems are an emerging type of networks in which vehicles and roadside units are the communicating nodes, providing each other with information, such as safety warnings and traffic information. Vehicle-to-vehicle message exchange is considered the preferred pattern for safety-critical communication (e.g. in anti-collision active systems). Recently, LED-based optical wireless communication has been also proposed for car to car message delivery. This option turns to be particularly effec… Show more

“…Moreover, Colour Shift Keying (CSK) is also considered as third modulation scheme. Focusing on VLC in ITS, two types of systems, namely, camera-based [11], [12], [13], [14], [15] and photodiode-based [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22] systems are considered in literature. The high speed cameras are expansive and computationally complex to be used in automotive industry.…”

“…1) Photodiode-based: Kim et al [23] presents a static VLC link with 500 kbps data rate at a communication distance of 20 m with a light shield and a red filter to avoid saturation under strong sunlight. To enhance the communication range, Corsini et al [15] concentrates the output power of the transmitter to a divergence angle of 18 • by adding a lens in front of the transmitter, reporting a data rate of 115 kbps at 31 m. Longer communication range are demonstrated in other works [6,26], delivering a communication range of 40-50 m with 15-20 kbps data rate. Longer range of 1.2 km with 2 Mbps data rate is reported in [21], yet their system only allows a fixed, very narrow FOV.…”

“…On the other hand, low-cost dedicated photodetectors are quite efficient regarding noise performances and data rates, and they seem to provide a good, lower-cost alternative for vehicular communications. Recent works focused on either V2V applications with data rates ranging from 20 kbaud [19] up to 115 kbaud [20], or I2V [21][22][23] implementations. In particular, in ref.…”
