Freely distributed bed-net use among Chano Mille residents, south Ethiopia: a longitudinal study

Abstract: BackgroundA huge discrepancy was reported between ownership versus utilization of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs). To acquire the benefits of ITNs, households need to use and not merely own them. The objective of this study was to characterize the pattern of, and assess factors related to ITN use in one village in south Ethiopia.MethodsA prospective cohort study involving 8,121 residents (in 1,388 households) was carried out from April 2009 to April 2011 (101 weeks). “…The age specific pattern observed has been reported by other researchers in different contexts including DRC, [11, 2325]. Interestingly, in this study, the same pattern was observed even in households possessing sufficient numbers of LLIN to cover all residents, suggesting a behavioural gap in LLIN use among older children and adolescents.…”

“…These results were corroborated by a comparative study by Ricotta et al [39] and 2011 found a similar uniform situation over time-even after mass distribution of LLINs [23]. Similar results were found in a study in Indonesia, Timor-Leste [41].…”

“…However, the in uence of the policy of prioritizing the prevention and control strategies (PCS) for under ves on the over ves remains largely unexplored and, presumably, has not been considered in the policies to date. Regarding LLINs, beyond their irregular and decreasing use over time [22,23], very few studies have explored the practices of use by children over 5 years of age. Among PCSs, LLINs are speci c in that their protective e cacy requires regular use, adherence to their use by the entire family, and accessibility [1].…”

“…Worn-out nets have been a barrier to the use of nets in some studies [28]. All participants in this study could avoid holes in their nets by observing some simple practices such as folding them up every morning.…”
