Andrographolide (AG) is one of the compounds in Andrographis paniculata, which has a high antibacterial activity. This paper reports the freeze–thaw method’s use to synthesize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels loaded with AG and its characterization. From the morphological examination, the porosity of the PVA/AG hydrogel was found to increase with the increasing AG concentration. The swelling degree test revealed that the hydrogels’ maximum swelling degrees were generally greater than 100%. The composite hydrogel with the highest fraction of andrographolide (PAG-4) showed greater weight loss than the hydrogel without AG (PAG-0). The molecular interaction between PVA and AG resulted in the narrowing of the band attributed to the O–H and CO stretching bonds and the emergence of an amorphous domain in the composite hydrogels. The loading of AG disrupted the formation of hydroxyl groups in PVA and interrupted the cross-linking between PVA chains, which lead to the decrease of the compression strength and the crystallinity increased with increasing AG. The antibacterial activity of the composite hydrogel increased with increasing AG. The PAG-4 hydrogel had the highest antibacterial activity of 37.9 ± 4.6b %. Therefore, the PVA/AG hydrogel has the potential to be used as an antibacterial device.

Dayak Jangkang people’s knowledge about the potential use of plants as medicine to cure internal diseases has not been found in the scientific literature. This research aims to record the types of plants (local name, scientific name, family), plant organs used, processing methods, specifications of plant benefits used by Dayak Jangkang people to treat internal diseases. The research approach used is qualitative descriptive. The data collection tool used is a semi-structured interview sheet. The informant who helped the research process was as many as ten people. Informant was determined using purposive sampling techniques. The data is analyzed descriptively based on interviews and literature studies. The results of the study were obtained as many as 34 types of plants that were used by the Dayak Jangkang tribe to treat internal diseases. The number of families used as many as 19, with the most families being Zingiberaceae.

Sirih merah (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) leaves has traditionally been used as a medicinal plant. The content of secondary metabolites contained is assessed to show pharmacological activity. The secondary metabolites in question include tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids/triterpenoids and saponins. This study aimed to determine the total tannin content and the potential antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of P. crocatum leaves. Extraction process by maceration using ethanol, measurement of total tannin content by colorimetric method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a maximum wavelength of 745 nm and determination of antibacterial activity by disc diffusion. The results of this study showed that the ethanolic extract of P. crocatum leaves contained about 0.118±0.003 mg TAE/g of dry ethanolic extract. The results of activity testing against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus showed activity as antibacterial.
