Frequencies of pneumococcal types causing serious infections in patients admitted to the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, 1969–77

Abstract: SUM1IMARYDuring a 71 year period pneumococci were isolated from body fluids of 124 patients at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford -72 with pneumonia, 26 with meningitis and 26 with other serious infections. Eighty-one (65 %) of the patients were over 50, and 33 (27 %) were over 70 years old. Of the 124 pneumococcal strains 104 (84 %), including 23 (79 %) of those from patients who died, belonged to types included in the vaccines successfully used in South Africa and in Papua New Guinea. “…Group 9 pneumococci were found to comprise approximately 5 to 8% of pneumococcal isolates from blood and cerebrospinal fluid in the United States and Europe during 1938 to 1979 (1,9,16,24,25,30). Among the four cross-reactive types in group 9 (9N, 9A, 9L, and 9V), type 9N was most frequently observed (about 80%) among disease isolates from adults (1); types 9L and 9V each account for 10% of the remaining isolates (J. Henrichsen, unpublished data).…”
