Frequency of Celiac Disease in Patients With Chronic Diarrhea

Abstract: Introduction: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disease caused by ingesting gluten-containing foods and is characterized mainly by malabsorptive diarrhea. Furthermore, distinguishing between mild disease and asymptomatic individuals is critical and necessitates a high level of clinical suspicion. “…Chronic diarrhea is a predominant manifestation in 43%-85% of patients with newly diagnosed CeD. Conversely, the prevalence of CeD in patients referred to secondary care with chronic diarrhea has been reported to range from 3% to 12.2%[ 17 , 18 ]. Given the high occurrence of CeD in patients with chronic diarrhea and the delay in diagnosis of CeD, several gastroenterology societies such as American Gastroenterological Association, and British Society of Gastroenterology has recommended screening for CeD as first line investigation in patients with chronic diarrhea[ 17 , 19 ].…”

“…Certain group of patients with conditions like chronic diarrhea, short stature, iron deficiency anemia, type I diabetes mellitus, and first-degree relatives of patients with CeD, however, should be screened as the prevalence of CeD has been reported to be much higher in them as compared with that in the general population. [27][28][29][30][31] Although the results found in this study are based upon a large number of adult patients who were recruited from different regions of the country, this study has certain limitations. This study is a retrospective study that highlights the delay in diagnosis from symptom onset in CeD patients, but there was limited data available to highlight the delay in diagnosis from the time of first medical contact which is a clinically relevant variable to analyze and improve the existing health care facilities and practices.…”
