From Design Requirements to Effective Privacy Notifications: Empowering Users of Online Services to Make Informed Decisions

Abstract: Privacy notifications issued by Transparency-Enhancing Tools (TETs) constitute a conceptual means of informing users of online data services about how their personal data are processed. We elicit a set of design requirements that reflect the particularities of privacy notifications received on mobile phones. Pursuing the principles of human-centered design, we evaluate the efficacy of a prototypical implementation for the context of personal health tracking in an iterative lab study. Our findings show that pri… Show more

“…Other examples of work on privacy labels include privacy nutrition label (Kelley et al, 2009), GDPR-based privacy label for IoT devices OnLITE (Railean and Reinhardt, 2020) and security and privacy label with device factors (Shen and Vervier, 2019). Another approach that has been investigated regarding transparency-related controls is the design of user notifications and nudges (Murmann and Karegar, 2021). Furthermore, prior work has explored the design of multi-user controls.…”

“…Different approaches have been taken to better inform user decision-making: from nudging user choices (Acquisti et al, 2017;Caraban, Karapanos, Gonçalves, & Campos, 2019) to allowing users to customize their own privacy settings (Adjerid, Acquisti, & Loewenstein, 2019;Zhang & Sundar, 2019). However, when many interventions come short, a way to improve this and aid user decision-making is to associate the consequences with the actions, which can be done through relevant notifications, specific and concise (Murmann & Karegar, 2021;Pinder, Vermeulen, Cowan, & Beale, 2018). Otherwise, one leaves people to their own devices, hoping that learning from experience will result in the correct mental models, even though with the rapid development of technology, these mental models can quickly become irrelevant.…”
