From extra- to intratextual characteristics: Charting the space of variation in Czech through MDA

Abstract: This paper is part of a larger research effort on language variability aimed at uncovering the relations between extra- and intratextual characteristics of Czech texts by means of multi-dimensional analysis. The palpable lack of prior art on quantitative register analysis of Czech led to several distinctive methodological decisions, concerning namely corpus design, feature selection and the parameters of factor analysis, especially the number of dimensions to extract. We report on these for their potential rel… Show more

MDA has been widely used to analyze a range of register studies, such as corporate annual reports (Ren & Lu, 2021), academic writing between Anglophone and non-Anglophone experts (Omidian et al, 2021), contemporary American television (Sardinha & Pinto, 2021) and the extra- and intratextual characteristics of Czech texts (Cvrček et al, 2021).…”

“…Corpus was adopted to perform an empirical bottom-up analysis of linguistic features based on the collection of texts, and the development of empirical register research coexists with that of empirical corpus-based research (Seoane & Biber, 2021). MDA, as the corpus-based method, was widely used in different register studies, such as Czech texts (Cvrcˇek et al, 2021) and television programs (Sardinha & Pinto, 2021). Moreover, MDA was also used in some newburgeoning online registers, such as internet texts (Sardinha, 2018), blogs (Shakir & Deuber, 2018), and Twitter (Bohmann, 2020).…”

“…Text categories grouped at this pole are various narrative novels, private correspondence, or web forums (Cvrček et al 2020). They have narrative and reflective characteristics; verbs of thinking are common in web forums and correspondence (Cvrček et al 2021). The preparedness of the text does not seem to play a role, while subjectivity and interactivity seem connected to the positive pole.…”

“…Official documents, science papers, encyclopedias, and other official documents dominate it. The objective perspective and text types that appear without interaction seem to be associated with this pole (Cvrček et al 2021). Based on the description of the poles of the first dimension, we created two rating scales.…”

“…Depending on the text type, some chunks had to be synthesized from multiple smaller length texts while others were taken from larger texts. This was done in order to control for possible biases introduced by text length in multidimensional analysis, which was the primary purpose of the corpus (Cvrček, 2021). Only 9% of all Koditex texts represent spoken Czech, with 2.6% representing informal unprepared private dialogue.…”
