From morphology to molecules: a combined source approach to untangle the taxonomy ofClessinia(Gastropoda, Odontostomidae), endemic land snails from the Dry Chaco ecoregion

Abstract: BackgroundLand gastropods of the Dry Chaco merit special attention because they comprise a highly diverse but barely studied group. Clessinia Doering, 1875 are typical inhabitants of this ecoregion. The inclusion of their distribution areas into Spixia range, their shell shape similarities, and a former molecular study raised doubts on the monophyly of this genus. The present study review the species of Clessinia, under a morphological, geometric morphometrics, and molecular combined approach.MethodsAdults wer… Show more

“…The soft parts of four adult individuals (IBS-Ma 383-2, 383-5, 565-3, 565-4) were dissected using a Zeiss Stemi SV6 stereomicroscope with a camera lucida device. Terms proximal and distal refers to the position of an organ or part of an organ in relation to the gamete flow from ovotestis (proximal) to genital pore (distal) (Cuezzo et al 2018).…”

“…Illustrations of the dissected organs/systems were carried out with the aid of a camera lucida. The terms proximal and distal refer to the position of an organ or part of an organ in relation to the gamete flow from ovotestis (proximal) to genital pore (distal) as in previous works ( Cuezzo, 2006 ; Cuezzo et al, 2018 ). The distinction of the limits between the epiphallus and penis is based on the internal sculpture of their inner wall.…”

“…However, the subsequent blossoming of molecular-phylogenetic studies has for the first time allowed in-depth examination of evolution from the gene up. A key component of this research centres around and below the species, with much of the focus in case studies now reframed as the “species complex” 1119 . And exciting challenges now involve rethinking of once-given species, including their genetic discrimination 20 as well as delineation of their putative evolutionary components.…”
