From Smart Grid to Super Grid: Solutions with HVDC and FACTS for grid access of renewable energy sources

Abstract: Innovative solutions with HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems)have the potential to cope with the system planning and operational challenges of global climate developments and the call for changes in the way electricity is supplied. New power electronic technologies with self-commutated converters make advanced technical features possible, such as independent control of active and reactive power, and the capability to supply weak or passive networks. As part of the ov… Show more

“…and to, establish a wide-area intelligent transmission network. The aims of this proposal are to realize the power fluctuation suppression of renewable distribution generations in a wide-area range and large-scale efficient integration of renewable energy sources, guarantee the safe and stable operation of the power grids, improve the power supply quality, promote the harmonious development of renewable energy sources and power system and so on [31][32][33]. China can also construct DC grids based on the largescale offshore wind farms in the future.…”

“…Therefore, installation of WP is sharply increasing all over the world. However, the intermittent characteristics of WP may have negative effect on grid stability, especially in weak grid [1]- [3]. Power system of Faroe Island which is not connected to Supergrid in Europe started the Husahagi project with ramp rate control in 2015.…”
