From the Pacific Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea:Watersipora arcuata, a new non-indigenous bryozoan in Europe

Abstract: This study reports the first record of the cheilostome bryozoan Watersipora arcuata in the Mediterranean Sea, namely in a marina of the Ligurian Sea (Italy), during two monitoring surveys carried out in 2013 and 2014, representing to date the first European finding. The species, whose native origin is deemed to be the Tropical Eastern Pacific region, was already reported as being introduced to California, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, but not outside the Pacific Ocean. The genus Watersipora includes 13 sp… Show more

“…Distribution: It is a widespread species distributed from the tropical Pacific such as the Mexican Pacific coast, California and Hawaii, extending down to Australasia ( Wisley, 1958 ; Skerman, 1960 ; Banta, 1969 ; Coles, DeFelice & Eldredge, 1999 ). In the Mediterranean, it had only been reported from Porto Santa Margherita Ligure in NW Italy and Porto Rotondo Marina in Sardinia ( Ferrario et al, 2015 , 2017 ).…”

“…3d), as already noted by the author himself when he kindly sent us the sample. Accordingly, the introduction of this species in European waters actually occurred at least 25 years before its supposed first European record by Ferrario et al (2015).…”

“…Watersipora arcuata was described by Banta (1969b) from California, but the same author (Banta 1969c) considered it as non-indigenous species (NIS), probably introduced since 1963. The potential native origin of W. arcuata is thought to be the tropical Eastern Pacific, but nowadays, the species has been reported from Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific coasts of Mexico, California, Hawaii, and the Mediterranean (Ferrario et al 2015). The presumably first record of the species in European waters was made by Ferrario et al (2015) based on material collected in 2013 and 2014 in the Ligurian Sea (Italian NW Mediterranean).…”

“…As much as the spread pattern of P. imperator is a typical example of natural dispersal, the case of Watersipora arcuata Banta, 1969 is exactly the opposite. A relatively recent introduction, this fouling bryozoan was only known from one location in the Ligurian Sea, Italy (Ferrario et al 2015) up to the compilation by Zenetos et al (2017). In a matter of 2-3 years the species was discovered in Spain, Malta, Sicily, Turkey (Ulman et al 2017) and the Tyrrhenian Sea (Ferrario et al 2017), always in marinas for recreational craft.…”
