From Waste to Biosorbent: Removal of Congo Red from Water by Waste Wood Biomass

Abstract: The aim of the study was to screen the waste wood biomass of 10 wood species as biosorbents for synthetic dye Congo Red (CR) removal from water and to single out the most efficient species for further batch biosorption experiments. Euroamerican poplar (EP), the most efficient species achieving 71.8% CR removal and biosorption capacity of 3.3 mg g−1, was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Different factors affecting the bioso… Show more

“…The adsorbent concentration is an important factor that influences the adsorption process and defines the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for a given initial concentration of metal ions solution. 81 , 82 For the purpose of observing the effect of this parameter on the rate of metallic bio-sorption and determining the lower and upper levels of OMSR-W concentration for removing the metals efficiently; uptake experiments were carried out using different concentrations of OMSR-W at a pH value of 5.5. The results obtained are shown in Figure 4c .…”

“…This is basically what led to the increase in metal ions removal. 80,81 However; the adsorption will increase up to certain OMSR-W concentrations, after that, the effect of the increase in OMSR-W amount becomes insignificant. This is due to the inability of metal ions to reach to the adsorbent surface.…”

“…Although not regularly investigated in biosorption studies, particle size can be an important factor in heterogeneous chemical reactions and adsorption [ 203 ]. The small particle sizes result in a higher specific surface area.…”

“…If the particle size is too small, the adsorption capacity may be lower, depending on the type of adsorbent, as the lighter particles float and thus cannot contact the solution. The separation of these small particles from water after biosorption can be challenging [ 203 ].…”

“…Adsorption isotherms provide information about the distribution between liquid and solid phases in equilibrium and give insight into the maximum adsorption capacity of an adsorbent for adsorbate [41]. For this purpose, the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms are usually used.…”
