Frontal Lobe Contusion in Mice Chronically Impairs Prefrontal-Dependent Behavior

Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of chronic disability in the world. Moderate to severe TBI often results in damage to the frontal lobe region and leads to cognitive, emotional, and social behavioral sequelae that negatively affect quality of life. More specifically, TBI patients often develop persistent deficits in social behavior, anxiety, and executive functions such as attention, mental flexibility, and task switching. These deficits are intrinsically associated with prefrontal cortex (PFC) fu… Show more

“…Although the most ubiquitous preclinical models of experimental TBI can be adapted to produce frontal lobe injury 35 , recent reports have employed the conventional open-head CCI and closed-head impact injury models to study the effects of TBI on substance abuse behavior. Importantly, these models recapitulate the cortical damage associated with coup contrecoup injury, and thus may be useful in understanding the cellular and molecular changes that occur in the PFC after TBI.…”

“…Além disso, a ansiedade também pode impactar nos aspectos cognitivos do paciente pós trauma de crânio, como por exemplo as funções executivas, podendo prejudicar o controle de impulsos ou a organização e planejamento de ações, e interferindo ainda mais na qualidade de vida (10,11).…”
