Fruit and seed macro- and micromorphologies of the genus Matthiola (Brassicaceae) in Turkey and their taxonomic value

Abstract: Macro-and micromorphological features of fruit and seeds belonging to 12 taxa genera of Matthiola W.T.Aiton were studied via stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. In macromorphological studies, the following variables were investigated: the shape, size, and color of fruit and seeds; the length of fruiting pedicel; the structure of the median vein; stigma (horns); and trichome properties and density in fruit. In micromorphological studies, the presence or absence of seed wings, seed coat pattern in… Show more

“…Seed color is diagnostic at the generic and specific level for some extent. The information of seed color is consistent with some previous studies such as Barthlott (1984), Pinar et al (2007Pinar et al ( , 2009, Kasem et al (2011), Kaya et al (2011) and Karaismailoğlu (2016). Also, the observed morphological variations in the seed are compatible with the diagnostic characters in Flora of Turkey (Davis, 1965) for Aethionema taxa.…”

“…The morphological features of the seeds present valuable data in the evolutionary classification of flowering plants (Corner, 1976;Kaya et al, 2011). The seed morphology of the examined Aethionema taxa includes important information in the identification.…”

“…The epidermal cells on seed surface showed odiametric or narrowly pentagonal or hexagonal shape. The results obtained in the present study are in conformity with the earlier data (Koul et al 2000, Kaya et al 2011, Moazzeni et al 2007.…”

“…The macro-and micromorphological characteristics of the fruit and seed of Brassicaceae have provided significant results between genera and sub-categoric taxa (Murley 1951, Fayed and El-Naggar (1988, 1996, Abdel Khalik and Maesen (2002). Koul et al (2000), Moazzeni et al (2007), Pınar et al (2007Pınar et al ( , 2009), Kaya et al (2011) and Paksoy et al (2016) investigated the morphology of fruit and seed in certain genera of Brassicaceae and provided evidence for the close relationships among various genera.…”
