Fruit Fly Fighters

Abstract: The campaign to eradicate the papaya fruit fly from north Queensland has been widely acknowledged by international scientists as a significant technical achievement that equals any similar control program world-wide. Fruit Fly Fighters is a highly readable and practical account of the whole campaign from 1995 when the papaya fruit fly was first discovered until 1999 when eradication was formally declared. “…MAT is a low-cost management strategy designed to attract and kill males so that mating is severely compromised [104]. MAT is used predominantly in orchards and urban control of fruit flies [19]. MAT uses para-pheromone lures (e.g., methyl eugenol or cuelure) in combination with an insecticide (e.g., malathion).…”

“…Bactrocera species (particularly OFF) are of most concern to Australia, as species in this genus have a long history of invasion and establishment globally (e.g., [14]). OFF, regarded as the most damaging and aggressive fruit fly [15], has the highest incursion risk due to its presence throughout Asia [16], invasion and establishment in Indonesia [17] and Papua New Guinea [18], and because of the historical incursion and subsequent eradication of OFF (then B. papayae) in far north Queensland, Australia in the 1990 s [19].…”

“…This taxon was given the common name of Asian papaya fly (Drew 1997), although studies in Malaysia had shown that papaya was not the preferred host of this species, which prefers instead starfruit and banana (Tan and Nishida 1996). The detection of Bactrocera papayae in northern Queensland, Australia, in 1995 resulted in a successful eradication programme costing over US$32.5 million (Fay et al 1997, Cantrell et al 2002). …”
