This paper introduces a Model Driven Engineering (MDE) development process for building automation applications. Currently, those applications are often written for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) in one of the supported modeling languages such as structured text, ladder diagrams and grafcets. The consequences of this approach are that (1) PLC experts are needed to develop the application, (2) it is difficult to verify the application's correctness and (3) when introducing other technologies such as embedded microcontrollers, even more experts are needed. This paper proposes an MDE development process that addresses these problems. The use of a domainspecific language eliminates the need for PLC experts, and developers can concentrate on the development of the building automation application. Models of the system or a transformation of those models to Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS), Statechart, or Causal Block Diagram (CBD) formalisms can be used to verify, simulate and optimize the application based on user needs. In a last step, the code for the target platforms can be generated directly from the verified and optimized models.

The current release of VIATRA provides opensource tool support for an event-driven, reactive model transformation engine built on top of highly scalable incremental graph queries for models with millions of elements and advanced features such as rule-based design space exploration complex event processing or model obfuscation. However, the history of the VIATRA model transformation framework dates back to over 16 years. Starting as an early academic research prototype as part of the M.Sc project of the the first author it first evolved into a Prolog-based engine followed by a family of open-source projects which by now matured into a component integrated into various industrial and open-source tools and deployed over multiple technologies. This invited paper briefly overviews the evolution of the VIATRA/IncQuery family by highlighting key features and illustrating main transformation concepts along an open case study influenced by an industrial project. Software tools in systems engineeringModel-driven engineering (MDE) plays an important role in the design of critical embedded and cyber-physical systems in various application domains such as automotive, avionics or telecommunication. MDE tools aim to simultaneously improve quality and decrease costs by early validation by highlighting conceptual design flaws well before traditional testing phases in accordance with the correct-by-construction principle. Furthermore, they improve productivity of engineers by automatically synthesizing different design artifacts (source code, configuration tables, test cases, fault trees, etc.) necessitated by certification standards (like DO-178C [117], DO-330 [116] or ISO 26262[78]).Certain shares in the software tool market of systems engineering are dominated by very few industrial tools (e.g., MATLAB Simulink, Dymola, DOORS, MagicDraw) each of which typically provides advanced support for certain development stages (requirements engineering, simulation, allocation, test generation, etc). To protect their intellectual property rights, these tools are of closed nature, which implies huge tool integration costs for system integrators (such as airframers or car manufacturers). On the other hand, recent initiatives (such as PolarSys, OpenModelica) have started to promote open language standards and the systematic use of open-source software components in tools for critical systems to reduce licensing costs and risks of vendor lock-in.Certification standards of critical cyber-physical systems require that software tools used for developing such critical system are validated with the same scrutiny as the system under design by software tool qualification [87,116], especially, when no further human checking is carried out on the outputs of such tools. The Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) advent is making way for the rapid deployment of network services (NS) for telecoms. Automation of network service management is one of the main challenges currently faced by the NFV community. Explicitly defining a process for the design, deployment, and management of network services and automating it is therefore highly desirable and beneficial for NFV systems. The use of model-driven orchestration means has been advocated in this context. As part of this effort to support automated process execution, we propose a process enactment approach with NFV systems as the target application domain. Our process enactment approach is megamodel-based. An integrated process modelling and enactment environment, MAPLE, has been built into Papyrus for this purpose. Process modelling is carried out with UML activity diagrams. The enactment environment transforms the process model to a model transformation chain, and then orchestrates it with the use of megamodels. In this paper we present our approach and environment MAPLE, its recent extension with new features as well as application to an enriched case study consisting of NS design and onboarding process.Keywords Process Enactment · Megamodelling · Papyrus · Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) IntroductionAutomating the end-to-end management of network services (NS), in other words, enacting the workflow or process for network service management without manual intervention is highly desirable in the telecommunications domain and remains a major challenge for network operators and service providers [11,38]. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) builds on cloud computing and has the ultimate goal of automating provisioning and management of network services -an essential feature for 5G systems. The European Telecom Standards Institute (ETSI) has recently launched a zero-touch network and service management group. As stated in [23], the challenges of 5G will trigger the need for a radical change in the way networks and services are managed and orchestrated.We believe the application of model-driven engineering (MDE) methods and tools is essential to further such developments in the NFV domain [8,31]. MDE advocates the use of models as first class citizens in the engineering process. The models are manipulated via transformations which form the backbone for automation in MDE. ETSI has recently released an information model for NFV [22]. Leveraging these models can substantially benefit the NFV systems by reducing their development and management efforts. Moreover, explicit modelling of the process not only allows for the automation of the NS management process but also paves the way for streamlining and optimization.
