Fucoidans in Nanomedicine

Abstract: Fucoidans are widespread cost-effective sulfated marine polysaccharides which have raised interest in the scientific community over last decades for their wide spectrum of bioactivities. Unsurprisingly, nanomedicine has grasped these compounds to develop innovative therapeutic and diagnostic nanosystems. The applications of fucoidans in nanomedicine as imaging agents, drug carriers or for their intrinsic properties are reviewed here after a short presentation of the main structural data and biological properti… Show more

“…It has been previously demonstrated in vivo by us and other groups, that fucoidan-functionalized nanoparticles or microparticles targeting P-selectin can be used for the diagnosis of endothelial activation and intraluminal thrombosis, and for tumor-selective drug delivery [29][30][31]. Fucoidan refers to a type of highly sulfated polysaccharide containing L-fucose groups [32]. This natural compound exhibits a high affinity for P-selectin, mimicking its main ligand the P-selectin Glycoprotein Ligand 1 (PSGL-1) [33].…”

“…In this work, we propose the use of nontoxic Fu to develop a natural marine-origin drug delivery system (DDS) for the release of anticancer drugs. Indeed, Fu have been included in nanosystems for diagnostic, drug delivery and regenerative medicine [9,10] and have been combined with chitosan (CH), a marine-derived polycation, to prepare…”

“…Then, the second-generation antidepressants comprise serotoninnorepinephrine reuptake inhibitors norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Although there is so much of advancement in the field of medicine, there is a drawback in the treatment of depression, and there is a failure to remission of the disease [32,33]. Moreover, there are still cases like so many; adverse events have been causing for the patients from various types of the system like refractory responsiveness.…”
