Fuel price changes and their impacts on urban transport – a literature review using bibliometric and content analysis techniques, 1972–2017

Abstract: While the period of heightened oil prices in 2005-2014 has attracted considerable academic and policy attention, there is scant cross-disciplinary research considering energy price, transport and land use together. In car dependent societies many socioeconomically disadvantaged areas often lack public and active transport accessibility. Emerging research focus has been placed on issues of transport equity including effects of fuel prices. We reviewed 45 years (1972-2017) of publications about fuel price impact… Show more

“…In this context, the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs; in this paper, electric vehicles include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs)), as part of the shift toward sustainable mobility, enables the reduction of GHG emissions in road transport and oil vulnerability [5,6]. EVs are considered a crucial component of the future transport…”

“…The scientific method of content analysis is used to analyze available emission freight calculators. The method of content analysis is based on the depth examination of sources [28]. This allows the collection and analysis of whatever user-generated content as electronic information [29].…”

“…Content analysis is one of the most commonly used methods to deal with qualitative data [31]. This method was, for example, used by Leung et al for the research processing in the area of fuel price changes and their impacts on urban transport, Zhou and Wang to explore the logistic market, Gao et al to explore the public participation in smart-city governance in Urban China, and Fu and Zhang to analyze master plans of eco, low-carbon and conventional new towns in China [28,[32][33][34].…”

“…As our analysis is restricted to network driven costs only, it is confined to a share of the total cost only. The cost of moving a vehicle is determined by many factors such as vehicle type [64], toll [65] or fuel [66]. We restrict the analysis to those factors that are related to the road network.…”
