Full-length genomic characterization and molecular evolution of canine parvovirus in China

Abstract: Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) can cause acute haemorrhagic enteritis in dogs and myocarditis in puppies. This disease has become one of the most serious infectious diseases of dogs. During 2014 in China, there were many cases of acute infectious diarrhoea in dogs. Some faecal samples were negative for the CPV-2 antigen based on a colloidal gold test strip but were positive based on PCR, and a viral strain was isolated from one such sample. The cytopathic effect on susceptible cells and the results of the im… Show more

“…CPV-2 is a common etiological agent that causes severe gastroenteritis in puppies and coinfects with more than one enteric pathogen (Zhou et al, 2016). T. Thaiwong hypothesizes that CPV-2 infection predisposed dogs to CaCV-1 infection and ultimately resulted in more severe diseases (Thaiwong et al, 2016).…”

“…Subsequently, widespread outbreaks of canine haemorrhagic enteritis occurred throughout the country and CPV‐2 infection emerged as an important infectious disease of dogs because of the high morbidity and mortality associated with the virus (Wu et al., ; Xu et al., ; Zhao et al., , , ). In 2015, new CPV‐2a and new CPV‐2b were discovered with full‐length genome analysis in Gansu province (Zhou et al., ). To investigate further the genomic characteristics of CPV‐2 in China, CPV‐2 identified from pet dogs with clinical signs of vomiting and haemorrhagic diarrhoea in the Animal Hospital of Chengdu in Sichuan province were characterized in this study.…”

“…The viral particle shows a spherical capsid and non-enveloped structure, with a diameter of 25 nm. The genome consists of a linear and single-stranded DNA molecule that is 5.2 kb in length, with two open reading frames (ORF) [ 2 , 6 ]. The first ORF encodes two non-structural proteins (NS1 and NS2) and the second ORF encodes two structural proteins (VP1 and VP2) that assemble the capsid with 54 units of VP1 and 6 units of VP2 [ 7 ].…”
