Fumonisin B1–Induced Cell Death in Arabidopsis Protoplasts Requires Jasmonate-, Ethylene-, and Salicylate-Dependent Signaling Pathways

Abstract: We have established an Arabidopsis protoplast model system to study plant cell death signaling. The fungal toxin fumonisin B1 (FB1) induces apoptosis-like programmed cell death (PCD) in wild-type protoplasts. FB1, however, only marginally affects the viability of protoplasts isolated from transgenic NahG plants, in which salicylic acid (SA) is metabolically degraded; from pad4-1 mutant plants, in which an SA amplification mechanism is thought to be impaired; or from jar1-1 or etr1-1 mutant plants, which are in… Show more

“…Genetically, SPI-PCD has been shown to engage several essential components of immunity such as EDS1, PAD4, and SA (Asai et al, 2000; Greenberg et al, 2000; Brodersen et al, 2002; Wang et al, 2008). However, despite the strong genetic connection, no direct protein target of bioactive sphingolipids for SPI-PCD and defense has been characterized in plants.…”

“…There is evidence that the phytohormone signalling pathways are interconnected (Pieterse et al 1998; Asai et al 2000; Clarke et al 2000; Mhamdi et al 2010). Generally, SA has an antagonistic effect on JA signalling.…”
