“…The periplasmic cytochrome c-551 of which the complete purification has been described here for the first time is the fourth soluble cytochrome c, after a cytochrome c' (Bartsch, 1991), a low redox potential cytochrome c and a low spin/ high spin cytochrome c , isolated from the purple phototrophic bacterium C. vinosum. Evidence has previously shown that in whole cells of C. vinosum, a soluble ctype cytochrome c-551 would fulfill a role as electron carrier between the final donor pool and the oxidised membrane-bound c-type cytochromes of the photosynthetic reaction center (Van Grondelle et al, 1977). Our sequence data now reveal that the purified cytochrome c-551 belongs to the family of cytochromes c8.…”

“…This is also supported by the observation that photooxidized cytochrome c-555 accepts electrons from cytochrome c-551 which is located in the aqueous periplasmic space [9,22], and therefore cytochrome c-555 exposes at least its functional surface to the aqueous periplasmic space.…”

“…rubrum and Rps. sphaeroides is difficult because in this case the electron is transferred from soluble c-551 to bound cytochrome c-555, but from the observed reaction rate [13] it may be surmised that the reaction probability is likewise small. In all these systems, despite the low reaction probability, the oxidation of soluble cytochrome is still sufficiently fast under physiological conditions to compete efficiently with the rate-limiting steps in the ubiquinol cytochrome c2 oxidoreductase which is in the order of 10 ms.…”
