Function of Phagocytes in Experimentally Induced Colitis in Rabbits II.

Abstract: Adhesion, phagocytosis, chemotactic and random migration, nitroblue tetrazolium dye reduction of peritoneal exudate neutrophils and macrophages, fibrinogen level, gelation of soluble fibrin and serial dilution protamine sulfate test were investigated in 115 New Zealand white rabbits with experimentally induced Shwartzman phenomenon in the colon, and in control animals. The results presented in this report demonstrated impairment of chemotactic migration of phagocytes in the presence of endotoxin. The depressio… Show more

“…Endotoxins also have been reported to inhibit chemotaxis of neutrophils to certain other chemotaxins. Issekutz and coworkers (20,21) found that endotoxins inhibit chemotaxis to C5a but not to culture supernatants of Escherichia coli, and other reports (18,19) have supported the finding that endotoxins can inhibit chemotaxis to complement-derived chemotaxins. However, Haslett et al (17) and Nitzan et al (26) provided evidence that endotoxins can inhibit chemotaxis of human neutrophils to the synthetic bacterial product N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP).…”
