Functional facial nerve weakness after surgery for benign parotid tumors: A multivariate statistical analysis

Abstract: A retrospective study was done on 64 patients who underwent superficial or subtotal parotidectomy for a primary benign tumor of the parotid gland. Factors, such as age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, type of surgery, duration of surgery, pathology of lesion, and size of lesion, were reviewed in a multivariate statistical analysis to determine if any factor alone or in combination contributed to the development of functional facial nerve weakness postoperatively. Only the age of the patient was found to hav… Show more

“…In recent years, intraoperative monitoring showed lower indices of temporary paralysis when compared to cases not subject to nerve monitoring 18 . However, intraoperative facial nerve monitoring has well-established indications and we do not deem its use necessary to reduce the number of paresis/ paralysis, besides our impossibility to utilize this type of monitoring.…”

“…Several factors have been implicated in the etiology of transient nerve palsy, which includes the extent of surgery, size and histological features of the mass, sectioning of the facial nerve or its branches, duration of the operation, surgeon's experience, and age of the patient. 6 The surgical procedure of superficial parotidectomy is a common procedure used for superficial parotid tumors. 7 It is essential to preserve the facial nerve when ever possible, so its identification and careful dissection is importance.…”
