Functional Implications of Photosystem II Crystal Formation in Photosynthetic Membranes

Abstract: Background:The functional significance of semicrystalline protein states in photosynthetic membranes is unknown. Results: A mutant with high levels of semicrystalline PSII arrays shows facilitated diffusion of small lipophilic molecules but restricted mobility of large supercomplexes. Conclusion:The results indicate that supramolecular protein organizations control photoprotection, electron transport, and protein repair. Significance: Changes in supramolecular organization of thylakoid membranes seem to underl… Show more

“…In this last model, a positively charged N-terminal segment of LHCII in one membrane interacts with a negatively charged stromal surface of the opposite LHCII trimer (Standfuss et al, 2005;Daum et al, 2010). Recently, however, the significance of LHCII-PSII supercomplexes and the LHCII trimer arrangement in grana membranes has been emphasized (Kim et al, 2009;Kou ril et al, 2012;Tietz et al, 2015). The contact between stacked adjacent membranes is made by the stromal surfaces of polypeptides of supercomplexes, mainly LHCII trimers, PSII core, and minor antennae (Daum et al, 2010).…”

“…Additional LHCII trimers can be found loosely bound to the supercomplex (i.e., L-trimers) [15], whereas some others are present in the membrane not directly associated with the PSII core [10]. Within the membrane, PSII-LHCII supercomplexes may associate to form PSII-LHCII megacomplexes or even large ordered arrays [16][17][18][19].…”

“…Dudkina et al ., for review), are important for the regulation and optimization of photosynthetic processes and small protein traffic (for reviews, see e.g. Kouřil et al ., ; Kirchhoff, ; Tietz et al ., ), and may also contribute to grana formation (Daum et al ., ).…”
