“…Contrast agents may also be used for an enhanced TROPUS performance. For example, indocyanine green (ICG) is mainly cleared through the liver, and thus can be used to assess functional differences between healthy and NAFLD mice by comparing clearance time [22]. Different types of nanoparticles can also be used to boost imaging sensitivity and contrast [46]- [49].…”

“…It is based on optical excitation of tissues at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths and tomographic detection of the thermoelastically-induced US waves, thus rendering rich optical contrast with high spatial resolution unaffected by photon scattering in deep tissues [19], [20]. In particular, multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) capitalizes on optical excitation at different wavelengths to spectroscopically differentiate between oxy- (HbO 2 ) and deoxy-hemoglobin (Hb), melanin, lipids and other tissue bio-chromes as well as extrinsically administered contrast agents [21],[22]. However, unambiguous anatomical differentiation of lesions and organs is hindered with MSOT whose main contrast stems from hemoglobin-rich structures such as major blood vessels.…”

“…According to the perpendicular or parallel relationship between incident light and the signal receiving surface of the detector, PACT systems can be roughly classified into two types [6][7][8]11,22,35 (Figure 1). The transducer of the former (Type I) is usually rectangular or arc-shaped, volumetric images are obtained by rotating the transducers or rotating the imaging object 8,11,20 (Figure 1a). The transducer of the latter (Type II) is usually ring-shaped to obtain cross-sectional images.…”

“…19 In 2021, Huang et al used multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) to visualize lipids in laboratory mice, and demonstrated that MSOT was an efficient imaging technique for lipid visualization in the preclinical model of fatty liver disease. 20 In 2022, Vagenknecht et al demonstrated tau protein imaging in mice brain using tau-targeted pyridinyl-butadienyl-benzothiazole derivative PBB5 and MSOT. 21 Clinical research of PACT mainly focuses on the examination of human breast cancer and skin melanoma.…”

“…Over the last years, PAI has shown great potential towards bioimaging applications, including the visualization of diseased organs, such as thyroid [187], liver [188], and skin [189], or the real-time monitoring of cancerous cells [190,191]. However, despite its exponential growth, its clinical translation is still limited due to certain factors, which are highlighted below along with proposed solutions.…”
