Functional probes for cardiovascular molecular imaging

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a severely threatening disorder and frequently cause death in industrialized countries, posing critical challenges to modern research and medicine. Molecular imaging has been heralded as the solution to many problems encountered in individuals living with CVD. The use of probes in cardiovascular molecular imaging is causing a paradigmatic shift from regular imaging techniques, to future advanced imaging technologies, which will facilitate the acquisition of vital information … Show more

“…This approach allows for the development of innovative imaging methods that can enhance the detection and treatment of cardio-related disorders. 79 Atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction are only two examples of the many cardiovascular diseases that contribute to sickness and mortality on a global scale. 80 Timely intervention and improved patient outcomes can be achieved by early and accurate identification of cardiovascular diseases.…”

“…Generally, tumors have many overexpressed biological receptors associated with abnormal growth, angiogenesis, metastasis, and immunosuppression . Chemical coupling of probes with tumor-specific ligands using the receptor–ligand interaction is the most common strategy for engineering tumor-specific imaging probes. Among the biological targeting molecules, monoclonal antibodies targeted against tumor-associated markers have been used to detect tumors with the highest specificity. Prolonged circulation time of monoclonal antibodies in plasma is advantageous for upregulating the drug accumulation in target tumor tissues .…”

“…The promising applications of these imaging probes in CVD medicine are due to the ability of nanoparticles to cross the biological barriers and to accumulate at the target site. 57 Nano-imaging in cardiology is an integrative approach for diagnosis and real-time monitoring during surgery and therapy. Nano-based cardiovascular imaging is interrelated to different fields of diagnosis, surgery, and therapy.…”
