Se presenta la creación de un cuestionario para la evaluación de factores ambientales relevantes en el déficit visual, basado en el capítulo de barreras ambientales de la Clasificación Internacional del Funcionamiento, la Discapacidad y la Salud de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. El cuestionario, denominado BAC-DV, tiene dos partes: un inventario de barreras físicas y tecnológicas y un cuestionario de actitudes. La selección inicial del contenido se realizó a partir de análisis de narrativas de entrevistas, revisión de la literatura y juicio de expertos. Se realizaron dos estudios empíricos. En el primero se calculó la fiabilidad de las dos partes y se eliminaron algunas preguntas poco representativas. El segundo estudio se centró en el inventario de barreras físicas y tecnológicas y permitió obtener su estructura, así como estudiar las características de los ítems. El inventario de barreras tiene cinco escalas: Exteriores, Interiores, Productos de la vida cotidiana, Tecnología de la información y comunicación y Obstáculos. El cuestionario de actitudes tiene tres escalas: Prejuicio, Condescendencia y Discriminación. Son necesarios estudios posteriores de validez y estructura, pero se puede afirmar que BAC-DV tiene validez de contenido y consistencia interna y es una aportación novedosa en la rehabilitación de la discapacidad visual.

Purpose To assess contrast sensitivity (CS) for detecting visual changes in suspected POAG patients. Methods CS was measured foveally at photopic conditions and peripherally at mesopic conditions using sinusoidal gratings of 4 cycles/degree. In experiment 1, foveal and peripheral CS were assessed in suspected POAG patients and age-matched healthy control subjects. In experiment 2, foveal CS was assessed in early POAG patients age-matched with suspected POAG group. Analysis was done considering two age ranges (Under and Over 50 years of age). Correlations between CS and clinical parameters were evaluated. Results Peripheral CS was decreased only for older POAG suspect patients from the control group (Over 50: p = 0.008. Under 50: p = 0.566). Foveal CS was reduced in POAG suspect participants for both age ranges (Over 50: p = 0.028. Under 50: p < 0.001) and in early POAG patients (Under 50: p = 0.001; Over 50: p < 0.001), both compared to the control group. Foveal CS was lower in early POAG compared to POAG suspect for older patients (Over 50: p = 0.019. Under 50: p = 0.824). Foveal CS was correlated with cup-disc ratio in early POAG patients (Early: p < 0.001. Suspect: p = 0.766) and with age in both patient groups (Early: p = 0.001. Suspect: p = 0.002). Conclusion CS is affected in patients with a high risk of developing POAG and recently diagnosed. Our results suggest that CS could serve as a screening tool, detecting early damage even before structural changes occur.

An experimental setup allowing the modeling of conditions in optical devices and in the eye at various degrees of scattering such as cataract pathology in human eyes is presented. The scattering in cells of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) and ‘Smart Glass’ windows is used in the modeling experiments. Both applications are used as optical obstacles placed in different positions of the optical information flow pathway either directly on the stimuli demonstration computer screen or mounted directly after the image-formation lens of a digital camera. The degree of scattering is changed continuously by applying an AC voltage of up to 30–80 V to the PDLC cell. The setup uses a camera with 14 bit depth and a 24 mm focal length lens. Light-emitting diodes and diode-pumped solid-state lasers emitting radiation of different wavelengths are used as portable small-divergence light sources in the experiments. Image formation, optical system point spread function, modulation transfer functions, and system resolution limits are determined for such sample optical systems in student optics and optometry experimental exercises.
