Inventory management along the agrifood supply chain is a subject of great interest due to the constraints related with the perishable condition of product. Signifi cant problems like demand forecasting, inventory management and transportation was evidenced within the supply chain studied. Additionally, the management of perishables and their lifecycle are the most frequently issue in this kind of supply chain.An inventory management policy is defi ned taking in consideration the optimal quantity for an order and the time for ordering so as to ward off costs related with understock or overstock. This paper presents a mathematical model for inventory management in agricultural supply chains considering perishability. The supply chain studied involves a retailer, a producer and a supplier. The advantages of integrating inventory management along the supply chain are discussed and fi nally some recommendations and research opportunities set forth.

This study belongs to the logistics area, specifically to the inventory management, which finds its application in the supply chain of a distributor and marketer of beauty products located in the city of Guayaquil. In this company, inventories are considered the largest capital investment, generating costs for their maintenance and control. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to design inventory management policies, in order to properly manage the inventories of the company, seeking to minimize costs and improve the level of customer service. In order to maintain control over the products, the ABC classification method was applied, then with the demand forecasting theory, the inventory review model was proposed to solve supply problems, finally certain action plans were recommended that contemplate the activities and means for the achievement of its objectives set by the company in the short and long term.

RESUMENEn la investigación se analizó la eficiencia del proceso de gestión de inventarios en un sistema multinivel con M-proveedores, una bodega central (BC), y cuatro minoristas para la cadena de abastecimiento de medicamentos del Hospital Universitario de la Samaritana, con el objetivo de determinar las cantidades adecuadas de pedido desde la bodega central hacia sus proveedores y desde las farmacias auxiliares hacia la bodega central, minimizando el costo total de inversión en inventario y a su vez el porcentaje del número de días con unidades faltantes. De los resultados computacionales obtenidos en la validación inicial se concluye que la aplicación del modelo propuesto genera un ahorro del 50% en los costos totales de inversión y 95 % en el número de días con faltantes para las farmacias auxiliares. Palabras claves: Cadena de abastecimiento, costo de inversión en inventario, gestión de inventarios, porcentaje de unidades faltantes, sistema de inventarios 1 almacén y N-minoristas. ABSTRACTThis research analyzed the efficiency of inventory management process in a multilevel system with M-suppliers, one warehouse (BC), and four retails for drugs supply chain at the University Hospital of the Samaritana, in order to determine the appropriate order quantities from the central warehouse to suppliers and from auxiliary drugstores to the central warehouse, minimizing the total cost of inventory investment and, in turn, the percentage of the number of days with missing quantities. With regard to the computational results obtained in the initial validation, it is concluded that the application of the proposed model generates a saving of 50% in the total investment costs and 95% in the number of days with missing quantities for auxiliary pharmacies.
