Furan Resins

Abstract: units of vitamin A per gram. Potencies of 150,000 units of vitamin A per gram have been obtained by lowering the yield of extract. These concentrates have also had removed much of the fishy odor and taste associated with the original oil.Tall oil has been fractionated to yield a fraction with only 1.3% rosin acid and 2.9% unsaponifiable matter, the remainder being fatty acid ester. This process involves the preferential esterification of the fatty acids followed by fractionation with a mixture of furfural and … Show more

“…Due to their exceptional resistance to corrosive chemicals (e.g. acids, alkalis and other solvents), they are also used in built environment as cementitious grouts, mortars, coating, impregnating materials, and sealants [61,72,[113][114][115]. These resins are also used in hospital operating floor coverings which demand low electrostatic resistivity to prevent electrostatic discharge from igniting flammable liquid substances often used in hospital environments [116].…”

“…When reinforced with fibre-glass, a material that is resistant to corrosion and heat distortion (at elevated temperature) with low flame and smoke emission level is obtained. This material finds applications in reinforced tanks, pipes, reaction vessels, vats, and ducts [72,[117][118][119]. For example, Lecite ® mortar, an FA resin, developed by Electro Chemical Engineering & Manufacturing, Emmaus, Pa, United States, was used in the construction of the scrubbing tower [120].…”

“…To fulfill the goal of reducing hazardous waste and producing high-performance materials from "green" materials, any proposed green or biobased alternatives to petroleum-based materials must meet several basic requirements before they can be used for high-performance materials and composites. The biobased precursors must be obtainable in large quantities in a consistent quality from renewable feedstocks, reasonably priced on the market, reactive in diverse reactions (6), and, most important to the DOD, have properties that can be maintained in highly stressful environments, such as solid rocket boosters or aviation and military structures (7).…”

“…This makes the furan ring of furfural unstable in acidic medium. Thus, condensation reaction of phenol and furfural cannot be carried out by acid catalysts 6–8. In acidic medium, phenol–furfural resins readily undergo a cationic polymerization reaction to give black infusible materials.…”
